With this warm weather, there has been plenty of wildlife activity. The Cuckoo Flowers are out, so the Cuckoo itself will be shortly here. In the hedge bottoms I have seen Grass snakes, one adult and one juvenile, in different places. If you are lucky you can see Lizards as well. The birds are nesting and I have seen a Robin sitting on eggs and found the remains of Blackbird eggs from when the young have hatched.
I have been clearing a site for development and found these juvenile Great Crested Newts. 43 in total out of a few areas along with some toadlets and froglets. These have now been placed in a new hibernaculum, safely away from the project development area, where they can grow to become adults. It takes 3 years for a Great Crested Newt to become an adult when they will return to the pond to breed. If you have a project that requires mitigation measures for newts and so a Natural England licence, KJ Ecology Ltd can help in all aspects of this from obtaining the licence to ensuring your project area is legally free from wildlife.
